Waltz with Bashir

I was going to post my extended Ballast and Ink reviews tonight but noticed that Tom had just posted on 3 films so I'll wait until tomorrow and give his excellent posts some time on Page 1. Instead, I thought I'd add a very short review on Waltz with Bashir which I brought home for the 31st time to finally watch tonight

..... and then didn't.

The clips I've seen actually look pretty enticing, but did they not dub it? I really don't see the point in subtitling an animation.

Dubbing is always stupid, animated or otherwise.

Ooh debate. So, if you guys slumped down on the couch upon an eve in the mood for a Miyazaki you would select the Japanese audio and enable the subtitles? Guess what
"I don't believe you!"
And as an example, I thought Renaissance was cooler with Daniel Craig. No? Depends on the film but if it's done well on a lightish or action flick, I'd usually rather watch the dub. Having said that, Ghost in the Shell - bad dub, Akira - bad dub and perhaps something as dramatic as Waltz makes more sense in it's original language. So, I think it's generalising to see it as a black-and-white issue. I think it has it's place in some animation. Then again I am lazy and stupid. Gonna go self flagellate whilst watching Satantango now, twice. See you tomorrow.

The dubbing on myazaki films is the best (dubbing) i've seen. And w/o ever actually watching one w/subtitles and Japanese audio - i'd venture to say that dubbed is the way to go. First being that the English scripts and voice talent is top notch and there is nothing awkward or jarring about the presentation. I mean Billy-Bob Thorton nails the monk in Princess Mononoke. As well as Michael Keaton in Porco Rosso (as Porco Rosso). That said, i see no reason to have your eyes dragged to the bottom of the screen for most of the movie - particularly for these ones because the visuals are so often great. Don't get me wrong, i cannot even attempt to watch live-action dubbing, unless its some old kung fu movie, but even that gets old. I will try one with Jap. audio but my gut tells me i won't be swooned by hyperbolic japanese accents and jokes lost in translation
