Scribes and coworkers

Tis that time of year again when we start assembling the year end flyer/magazine. I'm having Rick pull together a list of all of the movies added since Jan 1, 2009 and have been batting around some format and content ideas. I'm wondering what you guys think of rating (say out of 10) each title added this year, completing a much shorter write up for each film (basically a +/-20 word summary) and grouping them under genre, Criterion, TV series, etc. We collaborate on the ratings over a few weeks, divy up the write ups and go to town. We each add a longer piece on the state of the present-day film industry and releases this year – highlights and lowlights and print it.

Thoughts? I know I'd have a lot to catch up on but we could skim and steal other reviews to fill in the gaps.

format idea sounds great to me, and as always, i'm on board (as always, if you'll have me).

We would certainly cover alot more ground with the the formatting idea - and the longer pieces on larger patterns and movements is top notch. I only have reservations about a rating system, but they aren't very strong and I secretly always wanted to slap a number down to clarify an explanation.

ah, yes - i agree with nick. i say veto the ratings, as i think they too often oversimplify things, and people get in the habit of merely checking the rating and not reading the review. if someone simply wants a 0-5 star rating (or blank/10 or whatever) i think they're in the wrong place, and it would cheapen the overall tone of the thing.

I give both of your positions on this matter a 3/10.

I think it's true that people might skip the review and just check out the rating typically with longer reviews, but since Sporgey is suggesting 20 word reviews it will be about as difficult for them to read the review as it is for them to read the rating... what am I talking about, both of those things will probably be incredibly difficult for these people.

I'm happy to do a few, though probably not as many as the boys because of school and such. Welcome to send a few TV shows my way since I've watched nearly everything up on the new wall in the last 8 months.

A Bridge too far = 9 golden nuggets
Paul Blart Mall cop = 9 brown nuggets

maybe at the back of the flyer have each of our top 5's for 2009, a la Picthfork or Rolling Stone? i like compiling top 5 lists... if you didn't know by now.
Don't mind the rating system, just actually want to be used in this year end more than once, and to not have my review completely reworked would be nice too.

I like the top 5's idea Kris. Editing is a harsh but necessary part of putting these things together. Nearly every review is edited, mostly for reasons of space and not just your pieces.

It comes as no surprise that a bunch of arts majors don't know what boolean datasets are.

Kendall - you don't have time to do reviews but have watched 2200hours of TV in the last 6 months huh? Interesting.

Tom - golden and brown are our nugget choices eh? Interesting.

David's last day was today.

No, Scott, I watched them when they aired 8-12 months ago and I lived in England and had no job. But yeah... a lot of TV was watched.

I think we should do something different this year Joe.

how about Joe dressed up as the coppertone baby. Who wants to be the diaper-biting dog?
